“I want to be a painter” 1923-1939

Desde muy niño, Sempere demostró gran habilidad como dibujante y una determinación por ser pintor nada frecuente en niños de su edad.

Sempere showed a great ability in painting and determination to be an artist, from a very young age.
At the age of 8 he used to help the local barber on Saturdays, he would soak beards before shaving, the customers, in an attempt to make conversation, asked him: and you, little boy, what do you want to be when you grow up? And he answered: I want to be a painter. Surprised by the answer, they asked over: A wall-painter? Not a wall-painter -he replied- an artist. So unusual was this answer that it became anecdote and spread throughout the village. The memory of this determination was always on Sempere’s mind.
